About SDC

OUR GOAL

Swoboda Deaf Center (SDC) welcomes individuals within the Deaf community, encompassing those who are Hard-of-Hearing, DeafBlind, CODA, and ASL signers, as well as their families and friends. Our aim is to provide a convenient, comfortable, safe, and social environment.

The Center offers access to a diverse range of programs, educational classes, workshops, events, and social activities suitable for all age groups.

OUR HISTORY

On January 25, 2015, Swoboda Deaf Center (SDC) marked its official opening as the first community center specifically dedicated to serving the deaf and hard of hearing population in the Chicagoland area.

This center is dedicated to the memory of Lynn Swoboda, a remarkable Deaf woman. As a distinguished teacher, devoted wife of Thomas Swoboda, and loving mother to ten children, Lynn Swoboda enriched the lives of those around her with joy, compassion, peace, and understanding. Her unwavering commitment to assisting others was truly exemplary.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to Father Joe Mulcrone for his exceptional and enduring advocacy for the Deaf community. His tireless dedication to this service spans more than forty-five (45) years and is deeply appreciated.

St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church has long been a beacon for the Deaf community, fostering a vision of a new building owned and operated by the Deaf apart from the church. The dream of Phillip and Alice Vella, founders of the Foundation in 1994, has been honored through the naming of SDC’s Event Hall after the Vella family, recognizing their pivotal role in making their dream true for the Deaf community.

Since its inception, the Swoboda Deaf Center has had the distinct pleasure of hosting numerous individuals, providing a welcoming space for gatherings and the creation of enduring memories.
